Sunday June 27, 2010, 10:00AM to 5:30 PM
Pollinator Festival at Evergreen Brickworks
550 Bayview Ave
Members of the Toronto Beekeepers Co-op will be presenting two of five free workshops
1-2 PM Hive Life
Riddle: When is a honeybee like a baker? Answer: when it makes bee bread. Why are honeybees important to the food you eat? Who in the hive collects pollen and who uses it? Where is it stored in the hive? What special body parts make honeybees so good at collecting pollen? Join the Toronto Beekeepers Co-op as we take a close-up look at life in the hive to answer these and other questions.
2:30-4 PM Pollinator Identification and Monitoring
With the support of Pollination Canada TBC members Dave Barr, Maria Kasstan, and Norma Barr will introduce participants to the importance of pollination services, giving them hands-on experience in recognizing seven common types of insect pollinators (1 introduced and 6 native), showing how to support pollinators and how to monitor pollinator activity using the Pollination Canada protocol. The aim is to provide the incentive and ongoing support for participants to undertake some pollinator monitoring on their own after the workshop.
